But I recall that in about 2002 I had bought a new 60s Classic Strat in Sunburst and it was also bright and harsh sounding and I went right out and bought a whole set of 57/62 RI pickups brand new and installed them and they didn't help at all to get rid of the harsh biting high end. As far as the 57/62 Am vintage pickup set, yes they sound great as installed in the American Vintage RI Strats I've owned and played. Out of all the Strats I've had that was the best by far for a slightly darker, slightly warmer and smoother yet totally vintage Strat sound. It had stock Fender Custom Shop Fat 50s pickups.

My '61 Thin Skin had a master tone knob setup as I recall, or at least a setup that had the bridge/middle pickups wired to a tone knob.

Thanks, I will try a master tone mod like you suggest. I plan on swapping the pickups for a set of something meatier sounding but what can I expect soundwise from swapping in a Fender American Vintage tremolo bridge/block setup to replace the cheap MIM zinc parts? Also, any tips for better vintage Strat sounding pickups would be appreciated. I'm fairly certain it's the same pickups already in the Classic as the bottom plate has the exact same code number and they both measure about 5.75k ohms. 2006 pickup and it did nothing different. I tried a quick bridge pickup swap with a Fender American Std. The neck and middle and in between sounds are OK but the bridge pickup sound is very bright and tinny on the high strings.

I've had better sounding Strats and I've had much worse, like my 1979 Strat. Construction wise it's one of the cleanest and straightest Fenders I've ever owned including a "61 Thin Skin Strat I had. The great news is the guitar is bone stock, has zero fretwear (amazing considering the mess on the fretboard!) and when setup with the bridge radiused to match the vintage style board it plays fantastic with no fretting out or fret rattle. After cleaning up the body and the nasty dried crud on the fretboard I oiled the fretboard up real good with my current choice Lizard Spit FB conditioner and did a complete setup with neck adjustments. I just picked up a HONEY of a circa 2000 MIM 60s Classic Fender Strat in Lake Placid Blue.
